I love music that invokes emotion. the beats and tones in hip hop are supposed to provoke deep thought and create a mood around the poetry within. thus the old beats recycled and sampled and made new, like a new memory in an dive bar or favorite restaurant in your old neighborhood.
today in searching for the track i was going to put up i was reminded of the last time i really listened to the song (which is usually the effect of a good old song) and i felt kind of sad, but i had to laugh at the same time. for some insane reason i was reminded of Cyndi Herteg and my old studio apartment. she moved to LA to go to school, i remembered distinctly that she used to want to do costumes for theatre when she was in high school. not surprisingly, i think thats what she does now.
i was reminded more of the time period, not so much anything in my life that was similar to the content. in terms of contest, this song conquered my original idea, which was very much just fluff. the group performing todays vintage song is a very good example of contrast. contrast is a great group builder, it often creates timeless classics in hip hop. when you have two guys that sound alike all the time theres no building music like this:
Nice & Smooth - Sometimes I Rhyme Slow
Greg Nice sounds like he is excited and has a great presence for sounding confident and excited. Smooth B is always very calm sounding and his voice produces emotional content. they're a duo that never got off the ground. they were going to sign to Tupac's label before he died, i remember that, but the group never made it into the year 2000. three labels and four albums later, they're a very fond memory of music. every now and then i think they still do a cameo or two.
