Monday, October 1st, 2007 || Branagh's Hamlet
« Entertainment

Its no secret that i like reading. i like literature, and i love art as well as music. some are surprised also that i am a big Shakespeare fan, and that being said also i am a huge Kenneth Branagh fan. lets face facts... and its time for you to come to terms with this, it has not changed. i am not the stereotypical hip hop guy. i like artistic entertainment, not sports. not everyone who is into hip hop has watched scarface and studied it in depth. some of us just kinda watched it once on VHS and took it back to blockbuster. im saying this because every time i quote Shakespeare to someone in person, i get a comment or a remark or a look or something... as if i shouldnt know this stuff.

now, i have been waiting eagerly for many years for the release of my favorite of Kenneth Branagh's movies. i own the others i like (save, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. i should grab that soon. it has Robert Deniro in it)... but this one has been elusive. and delayed and choked and kicked into obscurity... as if it weren't already obscure enough. it was a very expensive movie when it was made and it was one of the first long movies i ever watched. it was packed full of stars and great monologues, and had a flagrant unnecessary sex scene (feat. Kate Winslet). it totally rocked the Shakespeare boat all over the harbor and then the boat exploded... metaphorically speaking.

on a side note, for some insane reason i took a date to this movie... she was a totally cute pot-head named Jenifer. i wasn't much more sober than her really, but i don't know how i thought a cute pot-head girl would a.) understand Shakespeare and b.) like it. truth be told, i doubt she had the intellect to put her shoes on the correct feet easily, not that i had any problem with her being without.... shoes... or anything else...... sorry, i lost my thought.

anyway, this movie has been referred to as both Kenneth Branagh's version of Hamlet and Hamlet (1996). i prefer to call it the good one. i have written about this before and i almost forgot about it. in fact i did for a month... until this morning when i checked to see if it was coming out yet and found out that it was released!!

Hamlet - 2 disk DVD (with commentary by Branagh) himself!

well... im going to buy it. and ill surely kill anyone in my way. so stay out of my way. especially you!

Persuasive review. Added to my Netflix queue in position #2. (My wife would *not* be happy if I bumped her movie from the #1 slot!)

we were watching it last night, we actually made it only to the intermission, right before he ditches Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. but i had forgotten excitingly flamboyant Kenneth was in this role. he really captured the essence of the methodical madness of Hamlet... especially around the play.
